Different pruning techniques may be deployed on herbaceous plants than those used on perennial woody plants. Hedges, by design, are usually (but not exclusively) maintained by hedge trimming, rather than by pruning. Trees are either evergreen, having foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year or deciduous, shedding their leaves at the end of the growing season and then having a dormant period without foliage.

In nature, meteorological conditions such as wind, ice and snow, and salinity can cause trees and plants to self-prune. This natural shedding is called abscission.

Arborists use various tools and equipment designed for the purpose of tree care, such as hand pruners, loppers, shears, pole saws, chainsaws, stump grinders and wood chippers.

What is tree topping?

Topping is the indiscriminate removal of tree branches above a certain height with little consideration for the tree’s structure or health. Tree branches are cut back to stubs or smaller branches which are not strong enough to grow back as a single, dominant branch. Instead, a flush of regrowth surrounds the wound. At times, homeowners think topping is necessary when trees have become too large for the property they are located on and, therefore, present a hazard. However, it is not a viable method for reducing a tree to manageable proportions. It creates more hazard than help!

Topping hurts trees and is not an acceptable pruning technique and is perhaps the most harmful tree pruning practice known. Yet, despite more than 25 years of literature and seminars explaining its harmful effects, topping remains a common practice.
